Why PPE Is the Last Line of Defence

7 minutesCrew talk · print & deliver

Guards, ventilation and procedures remove danger before it reaches you. PPE is different: it only works at the moment of contact. When a grinding disc shatters or acid splashes, there is no second chance to put your goggles on. This talk is about respecting PPE for what it is — the last barrier between a near miss and an injury.

The hierarchy of controls

  • Eliminate the hazard first, then substitute, engineer, and administrate — PPE comes last, not first.
  • If a job relies only on PPE, ask what other control is missing.
  • PPE failure = injury. That is why condition and fit matter so much.

Wearing it right

  • Hard hat: snug harness, no cracks, in-date; never drill or paint it.
  • Safety spectacles under a face shield for grinding — the shield alone is not eye protection.
  • Gloves matched to the task: cut-rated for blades, chemical-rated for reagents — one glove does not do both.
  • Boots laced fully; a loose boot on a ladder is a fall waiting to happen.

Care and replacement

  • Inspect before every shift; damaged PPE is reported and exchanged, never 'made to work'.
  • Keep respirator filters sealed until use and log the change date.
  • Sun-faded harnesses, cracked lenses and split gloves have already failed — replace them.

Discussion — ask the crew

  1. Which PPE item on this site is most often worn incorrectly, and why?
  2. What is the exchange procedure when your PPE is damaged mid-shift?
  3. Name one task where we rely on PPE alone. What better control could exist?
