Manual Handling — Save Your Back

6 minutesCrew talk · print & deliver

A damaged back rarely comes from one heroic lift; it comes from a thousand bad ones. Discs wear like brake pads — and there is no replacement schedule for a spine.

Before the lift

  • Ask first: does this need lifting at all? Trolley, pallet truck, hoist, or a second person.
  • Size it up — awkward beats heavy; test the load's balance before committing.
  • Clear the route: doors open, floor dry, destination ready.

The lift itself

  • Feet shoulder-width, load close to the body, grip firm.
  • Bend the knees, keep the natural curve of the back, lift smoothly with the legs.
  • NEVER twist under load — move your feet to turn.
  • Team lifts on one person's count.

Discussion — ask the crew

  1. Which regular task here most needs a mechanical aid?
  2. Demonstrate the difference between twisting and stepping around under load.
