NOVENEX Toolbox Talk — Ladder Safety — The Basics Done Right
Working at Heights · ±6 minutes · novenex.tech/toolbox-talks
A ladder feels too ordinary to be dangerous, and that is exactly the problem. Most ladder falls are under three metres — and still break backs and skulls. The rules are simple; the discipline is the hard part.
Before climbing
- •Inspect: stiles straight, rungs tight, feet present, no cracks (fibreglass) or dents (aluminium).
- •Electrical work near live equipment = fibreglass ladder, never aluminium.
- •Set at 1:4 angle (75°) — one metre out for every four up.
- •Footing firm and level; tie off at the top or have it footed.
While working
- •Three points of contact — carry tools in a bag or hoist them, not in your hands.
- •Belt buckle stays between the stiles; never lean out.
- •Top three rungs of a lean-to ladder are not for standing.
- •One person per ladder, no exceptions.
Discussion — ask the crew
- Who inspected the ladders in your area this month?
- Which jobs do we still do off ladders that should be off a scaffold or platform?
- How do we tag and quarantine a damaged ladder?
